This Bakery Truck:
The Twin Coach Company of Kent, Ohio, was formed in 1927 by Frank and William Fageol, manufacturers of Transit and Trolley buses, small delivery vehicles and postal vans. One of its most interesting products was this line of purpose- built, short-run delivery trucks. In 1937, competi- tor Divco merged with the delivery-truck division of Twin Coach and, until 1944, Divco delivery vehicles bore the name Divco-Twin.

The most memorable of the all-vertical-sided early-1930s delivery trucks was the Helms Bakery Company armada used to deliver fresh bread and other tasty bakery items throughout the greater Los Angeles area.

Native Angelenos may recall the distinctive two-pitch whistle that would announce the arrival of the Helms truck in their neighborhood. Residents would flag down the truck to purchase the day’s bread, like a scene from the iconic television show Leave it to Beaver. In the decades since this coach completed its years of delivery service, it still retains its Helms Safe-Driver plaque, as well as its distinctive whistle horn.

Despite the popularity of the coaches, precious few of the early models have survived and many are in the hands of private museums. This coach has been beautifully refinished in its original Helms livery, with fitted baker’s racks lining the cargo area. One feature of particular interest is the coach’s driving position. Called a Stand-and-Drive, the delivery man used only two pedals to operate the coach, a unique arrangement whereby the left pedal functioned first as a clutch; then, when pressed further, it engaged the brakes.

A prior owner of this truck fitted it with a small-block GM 350 V-8 engine, coupled with a Turbo 400 three-speed transmission, making it a healthy performer and easier to drive as the left pedal now strictly operates the brakes; however, special care should still be taken when learning to drive in the semi-standing position. The only outward clues of what is under the engine cover are the dual chrome exhaust tips extending beyond the rear of the coachwork. The original engine and transmission are offered with the sale of this truck should one decide to return it to the original specifications.

On inspection, one can feel the charm of an ideal time when life’s necessities were delivered daily to your door. This charming truck recalls a time all but gone the way of the milkman and the Fuller Brush man. .
