Styling cues from these two concepts made their way into the entire 1954 Buick line. The Skylark utilized many of these cues, and was based loosely on the 1954 Buick Wildcat II Motorama show car and rode on the revived for ’54 Century platform. Prior to WWII, the Century was Buick’s hottest line with presumptive 100 mph performance. This was an inspired choice for the redesigned Skylark. Not only did the mechanicals deliver the comfort demanded by Buick buyers, but also spirited performance. This was right in line with legendary GM stylist Harley Earls’ desire to create a “custom & personal” four-seat open luxury car. One of the most notable styling features lifted from the Wildcat II were the sculpted and contrasting wheel well openings. They are especially striking on our black subject car with red fender wells. The large and quintessential 1950’s taillight surrounds were also unique to Skylark. Our subject car, #638 of 835, is well known as one of the absolute best examples of Skylark available. Resplendent in formal black with a stunning red interior, the car rides on correct chrome Kelsey-Hayes wire wheels and wide whites. All of the irreplaceable Skylark trim is present and in show condition. The engine runs quiet and sure and is highly detailed, as is the chassis. The car also has a rare Selectronic signal seeking radio with foot control. The interior is in pristine condition including the gorgeous Eisenhower era steering wheel. In fact, the upholstery must be seen to be appreciated. This car runs, drives, and shows as new, and it is ready for the new owner to enjoy with admiring comments assured. Every aspect of this stunning auto stands up to the closest scrutiny. Carrying Buick nomenclature of series 100M and riding a 121.5” wheelbase with a 200HP “nailhead” V8, the Skylark gave impressive 100mph performance despite its 4,260 lb curb weight. Although more of a boulevard or highway cruiser rather than a stoplight terror, the current owner reports this Buick is an absolute pleasure to drive. The car runs and drives as one would expect in a car subjected to a high quality restoration. Every serious Buick collector covets an early Skylark to round out their collection. As these cars rarely come to market few collectors are afforded the pleasure of Skylark ownership. Few are in the outstanding condition of this example.
