Ford GT40 Replica MK1

Description:

GT40 Mk1 by Superformance. Guardsman Blue/white stripes.

Power train: 366 cid Dart block built by Lawrence Racing Engines employing the best internals possible and topped off with an 8-stack fuel injection; dyno results: 560 hp/7,500 rpm; the transaxle is a Quaife 5-speed fitted with a 3.77:1 final drive gearing an extraordinary formula when you compare it to how these fabulous Forties are typically powered and geared.

The majority of these driving machines are fitted with a Roush 427 stroker small-block V8 turning a maximum 6,000 rpm and delivering 500–550 horsepower, delivered through an antiquated ZF transaxle. The reasoning for that typical setup is twofold: the Roush is a very good engine, and can be purchased right off the shelf. Ditto the ZF, as it is also very robust. However, 550 horses in a 2,300 lb./±1,040 kilogram car with only 6,000 revs to redline means that you’re shifting a lot when accelerating through the gears. And the ZF is hardly easy to shift; it was great back at LeMans in 1965, since you needed only the last three gears, and for the most part just 4th and 5th. But for street driving, this is hardly ideal; so after owning and driving a CAV GT and powering it as is usually the case, I set out to accomplish something better with this one.

This car is ideally set up for street and track use. And driving at speed down a winding country road, you can leave it in 3 rd or 4th all day long because that engine boasts such a marvelously broad power band. Plus, the Quaife is light years ahead of the old ZF in every respect, including durability. The reason most folks don't choose it and use it is that it costs almost as much as the engine!

Rolling stock: 15" wineglass” Halibrand wheels shod with Avon radial rubber.

In the interior: Simpson 5 point harness drivers seat [stock belts come with the car], leather-wrapped steering wheel, ‘Gurney Bubble’–crowned drivers door.

This blue beauty was built by two of the mostly highly regarded professionals in the business: HRE Motorcars in Freeport, New York assembled the car, and Mark Wehrmann in Hauppauge, New York, balanced it and made it race-ready. I have receipts for $146,000 that I invested to build it and render it bulletproof.

This is a nicely-sorted car that you can drive anywhere, or take it onto the track where you will humiliate the gold chain troupe in their expensive Lamborghinis and Ferraris. Only 750 miles and in superb condition throughout.
