|NFL Lockout May Force Players to Sell Some Pricey Real Estate.
Star NFL quarterback Tom Brady, a longtime Jets nemesis, has hit a receiver in New York City. The league's reigning MVP found a buyer this week for a 74th-floor apartment at the Time Warner Center, which went into contract after being listed two-and-a-half years ago.
His wife, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bundchen, had previously sold two West Village homes, public property records show. That means one of the paparazzi's favorite couples have gone further to cut ties with New York, brokers say.
The three-bedroom condo was purchased in 2006 for $14 million by an entity called the Courage Under Fire Nominee Trust, which listed Mr. Brady's agent Donald Yee as a trustee. Brokers say the buyer was Mr. Brady.
He paid about $4,800 a square foot, at the time one of the most expensive sales on a square-foot basis in the building known as the Mandarin Oriental Hotel & Condominium. Situated on one of the building's highest floors, the condo has black lacquered doors, walnut wood floors and spectacular city views.
Mr. Yee declined to comment. Raphael De Niro of Prudential Douglas Elliman, the listing broker, also declined to comment.
Mr. Brady never moved into the apartment and sometime after he and his girlfriend at the time, actress Bridget Moynahan, broke up, he decided to put the condo on the market and rented it out to a family for $50,000 a month, according to a person familiar with the matter.
In recent years, Ms. Bundchen sold a townhouse and, separately, a penthouse in downtown Manhattan. The couple still owns homes in the Boston area and in Southern California, brokers say.
The New England Patriots quarterback is widely considered one of the best players in the NFL and is legend in Boston. He has won three Super Bowls, holds many regular season and postseason passing records and this year became the first NFL player ever to be unanimously voted as MVP.
Mr. Brady's relationship with New Yorkers has been mixed at best. He and his wife have been staples of the gossip pages, and in 2007 the Boston Herald worried that he had gone too native when the paper published a photo of Mr. Brady wearing a New York Yankees cap while strolling through the West Village.
But Jets fans will probably hold the open door when he leaves. The team has been frustrated by Mr. Brady's on-field heroics throughout his decade-long career, and more recently the bad blood has intensified.
Last year, Mr. Brady told a Boston radio show that he hadn't bothered to watch a popular HBO program about the New York football team, saying: "I hate the Jets." Some Jets players seemed to feel the same way about him. In an expletive-laden tirade against the quarterback before January's playoff game, defensive back Antonio Cromartie accused Mr. Brady of showing up the Jets.
Mr. Brady recently told NESN, a Boston-area sports network, that it seemed like Jets fans were taunting him whenever he went out in public. "Believe me, when I'm walking the streets of New York, I hear it all the time," he said.
