Coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring, Rare, European-Only Specification Alfa Romeo Six-Cylinder Convertible, Long Part of a Fantastic Western Collection, Properly Stored in Climate-Controlled Surroundings, A Four-Place Italian Sport Tourer Ready to be Enjoyed

Body No: 13018

2,584cc inline six-cylinder engine with dual-overhead camshafts producing 145 brake horsepower at 6,000 RPM, Triple Solex sidedraft carburetion, five-speed manual transmission, independent front suspension and four-wheel hydraulically-operated disc brakes; wheelbase: 98.4”

Produced from 1962 to 1968, Alfa Romeo’s 2600 was initially a worthy successor to its forbearer, the 2000 series. Historically significant today as the last example to feature Alfa Romeo’s traditional engine configuration of an inline six-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts, the trend towards more economical mass-produced cars influenced the company’s shift to four-cylinder engine production exclusively thereafter.

Initially introduced at the 1962 Geneva Motor Show, the first 2600 debuted as the Berlina, or sedan, with a factory-built body. The four-place Spider Convertible with a graceful and flowing body was styled by Carrozzeria Touring, as was the very special Bertone-bodied coupe, known as the Sprint

The Berlina, Spider, and Sprint were all based on the corresponding models that had preceded them in the 1961 Alfa Romeo 2000 range; as such, all three inherited the body styling of their predecessors with only a minor facelift. Consequently, the most radical change was that of the new engine. The new all-alloy 2.6 liter straight six sported a shapely cam cover that concealed twin overhead camshafts. It was particularly exceptional not in that it was a six-cylinder but also in that it was made entirely of aluminum, for it weighed barely more than the earlier four-cylinder engine with its cast-iron block. More remarkable still, even the Berlina received twin carburetion, while the engines fitted to Sprint, Spider (and the later Sprint Zagato) sported triple side-draft Solex twin-choke carburetors, helping these 2600 models achieve a commendable 145 brake horsepower.

From a sales point of view, Alfa’s entire 2600 model lineup was not a success, despite all-round praise for the excellent engine. In bringing about the 2600, Alfa Romeo had already decided to concentrate their development resources on the mid-sized Giulia, introduced at about the same time. The flagship 2600 range was a facelift of the venerable 2000 model, itself founded on the 1958 restyling of the 1950 1900. Apart from greater power output, one other sales point in its favor was that it was a four-seater convertible, though the two rear seats were hardly adult-sized as remains true with many sporting 2+2 models!

One of just 2,255 built, the 1963 Alfa Romeo 2600 Spider offered here is among a small number of well-preserved and expertly maintained examples of its type. All 2600s are rare on this continent, for they were never formally sold by Alfa Romeo in the United States when new, and the vast majority of those that did make it here have all but succumbed to the elements. Thanks to a long life in the western United States, the bodywork of this is particular example remains very straight and true with no evidence of prior accident damage, and the brilliant red exterior finish has been lovingly maintained over the years. The car’s black interior and convertible top complements the exterior color, and the new carpeting greatly enhances the overall presentation. Stored in a climate-controlled environment when not in use, the car continues to exhibit performance on par with its sleek appearance.

With great curb appeal, including looks that greatly resemble a California Spider, any new owner of this 2600 is all but guaranteed years of driving pleasure as well as plenty of ‘thumbs-up’ along the way. Bid today to enjoy the Alfa Romeo pedigree, performance, and handling built into this beautiful four-seat sports car.
